What a Pokémon damage range tells you

Read the calculator’s baseline damage and HP percentage without treating the highest roll as a guaranteed outcome.

Start with the baseline setup

This tool uses the Smogon calculation engine for a restricted Generation 9 comparison. It supports eight species and ten moves, with the specific assumptions listed on the calculator page. It is a compact comparison tool rather than a complete battle simulator.

Read the range rather than one number

The default Charizard using Flamethrower against Venusaur at level 50 produces a displayed range of 110–132 HP under this site’s baseline setup. The lower and upper numbers describe possible damage within that calculation. The maximum is not a guaranteed hit.

Try this in the calculator

Run the default Charizard, Venusaur and Flamethrower setup at level 50. Check both endpoints and the stated assumptions before changing a supported move or species.

Try the example ↗

Convert damage to a share of HP

The default defender has 155 HP. The endpoints correspond to 110 ÷ 155 × 100 ≈ 71.0% and 132 ÷ 155 × 100 ≈ 85.2%. Both are below 100%, so this displayed range does not show a full-health knockout under the stated assumptions.

Do not infer a whole battle

Items, investment, stat changes, weather and other conditions can change a battle calculation. This interface does not expose all of those settings. It also does not verify whether the selected Pokémon can legally learn the selected move.

Use a consistent comparison

Change one supported input at a time and read the assumptions with the result. Do not compare outputs from different battle generations or setups as if they were interchangeable. Use a fuller battle calculator when you need conditions beyond this tool’s supported controls.
