What this calculator does
Find the physical dimensions of an image at a chosen pixels-per-inch setting. The calculator preserves the original aspect ratio and does not crop or resample your photo. The result is a size at the selected resolution, not a universal maximum: viewing distance, subject detail and print medium affect what looks acceptable.
Formula, assumptions and sources
Print inches = pixels ÷ pixels per inch (PPI). Centimetres = inches × 2.54. No cropping or upscaling. PPI is distinct from printer DPI.
Worked example
This example uses the initial values shown in the form. It is illustrative and is not a saved personal result.
Example inputs
- Image width (pixels)
- 6000
- Image height (pixels)
- 4000
- Target resolution (PPI)
- 300
- Output units
- inches
Example result
At 300 PPI without resampling. Lower PPI may suit prints viewed from farther away.
Frequently asked questions
Are PPI and DPI the same?
No. PPI describes pixels in the image per printed inch. DPI describes printer dots and is not the same input.
Will changing PPI add detail to my image?
No. This calculator keeps the same pixel count. A lower PPI produces a larger physical print without creating additional image detail.
